Andover Public Schools currently has two programs for children under age 5, the Early Childhood Program (ECSE) and the At Risk Pre-K Program.
Early Childhood Program
This program is a Special Education program that works with students who have special needs and Peer Model students. The Peer Model students in this program are chosen through a lottery drawing and screening process each year.
The Peer Model Program provides an opportunity for typically developing children to be integrated into the Early Childhood Special Education classrooms to serve as role models for children with special needs.
Peer Model students provide positive peer interactions, demonstrate play skills and model appropriate language and behavior for students with special needs while in the classroom setting.
Peer Model applications are due by 2/22/10 in the Prairie Creek Elementary School office.
At Risk Pre-K Program
This program serves children throughout the district who will be 4 years of age by September 1 of the current school year. In addition, qualifying children must meet ONE or more of the following criteria:
- Single parent household
- Parent(s) was a teenager when child was born
- Parent(s) do not hold a high school diploma or GED
- Limited English proficiency
- Family qualifies for federal lunch program
- Child has a developmental delay as documented through assessments
Enrollment is limited based on need. Transportation is available.
Parents can also identify potential learning problems and get help by having their child evaluated at a Count Your Kid In screening. This is a free developmental screening for infants and preschool children. If your child has difficulty walking, talking, seeing, hearing or learning, call 1-800-353-8561 to set up an appointment for screening. This is the initial step needed to qualify for the Early Childhood Program.
