Web site evaluation
July 20, 2005
When looking for web sites you need to be two things - smart and selective!
There are lots of web sites that have false information. You need to look closely at ALL sites for PROOF that the site has good information and is by a good source. Print out and use the following form to decide what is good and what is bad!
Your Name ________________________________
Title of the site - (Example: Mrs. Eastman's Web Site) ____________________________________________________________
URL Address - (Example: http://usd385.org) ______________________________________________________________
| Yes (Good) |
No (Bad) |
NA (Not Applicable - could be good or bad!) |
Authority (Who owns the web site? Why?) |
| . | . | . | Can you contact them? Name? E-Mail address? |
| . | . | . | Is the sponsor a business or school? |
| . | . | . | Does the author have special skill or knowledge on the subject? |
| . | . | . | Is the information one sided? |
| Content (Is the information accurate and reliable?) |
|||
| . | . | . | Is the update date listed? When _____ |
| . | . | . | Is the information useful or meaningful? |
| . | . | . | Is it original? |
| . | . | . | Is it factual? |
| . | . | . | Is it opinion? |
| . | . | . | Is there primary source material? |
| . | . | . | Do the links to other web sites work? |
| . | . | . | Is everything spelled correctly? |
| . | . | . | Is it easy to find everything? (Buttons, links, sections, etc.) |
| . | . | . | Is it easy to read? |
| . | . | . | Would you recommend this site to other people? |
Count how many checkmarks you have in the YES/good column versus the NO/bad column. Do you have any checks in the NA column? If you have mostly YES/good column's checked then it is probably a pretty good site to use! Good luck hunting for the perfect web site!
